NEVIDIO CANYON

Nevidio Canyon is one of the most beautiful and dramatic canyons in Montenegro. It is carved by the Mala Komarnica river, which rises at the foot of the southern slopes of Durmitor in the basin of Dobro Dol. The river plunges between the peaks of Boljski Gred (2,091 m) and Lojanik (2,091 m) before reappearing in a gentle valley. It is approximately 1.7 km long, with the entrance at 935 metres and the exit at 810 metres above sea level.

Secluded and hidden in inaccessible terrain, Nevidio aroused curiosity for decades. There were many strange stories about the last unconquered canyon in Europe. The first serious attempts to explore it were made in 1957 and 1964 — both unsuccessful. It was not until August 1965 that members of P.S.D. Javorak from Nikšić finally passed through and presented the world with its long-hidden, wild and astonishing beauty.

The first contact with Nevidio is overshadowed by indescribable beauty — unusual and strange to what a person is accustomed to. Most of the canyon remains in eternal shadow; because of the vertical rock walls, the sun's rays cannot reach the bottom. On the steep and inaccessible rocks, conditions for vegetation are harsh, making the canyon a jewel of raw nature that is simultaneously heaven and hell.

In places the width is less than one metre. The full length of the active section is 1,700 metres and the crossing takes approximately 2.5 hours. It is among the finest canyoning experiences in Europe.
