Located just 35 kilometres southeast of Kolašin along the road to Podgorica, the Mrtvica Canyon is one of Montenegro's best-kept secrets. It stretches for 9 kilometres through sheer cliffs that reach depths of approximately 1,250 metres — making it the second largest canyon in Europe, behind only the Tara. The river Mrtvica remains drinkable along its entire length, a testament to the untouched wilderness through which it flows.

The canyon is rich in both natural and cultural heritage. On the first kilometre upstream stands Zeleni Vir, a particularly beautiful spot where Prince Danilo of Montenegro had a stone bridge built in 1858 in memory of his mother Krstinja. Deep within the canyon lies the mystical Gate of Desires — a rock formation steeped in local legend, where visitors silently throw a stone and make a wish. The surrounding Moračke mountains are blanketed in ancient beech forests and scattered with natural springs.

The full hiking circuit through Mrtvica takes approximately 6 hours and is suitable for those in reasonable physical condition. It is one of our most popular guided treks — wild, beautiful and far less crowded than many comparable European destinations.
